Thejibs,thebrigantine,thefore-staff,andthestay-sailsareeasilymanaged.Theycanbehoistedfromthedeckwithoutthenecessityofclimbingthemasts,becausetheyarenotfastenedontheyardsbymeansofrope-bands,whichmustbepreviouslyloosened.
Onthecontrary,theworkingoftheforemastsailsdemandsmuchgreaterproficiencyinseamanship.Infact,whenitisnecessarytosetthem,thesailorsmustclimbbytherigging—itmaybeintheforetop,itmaybeonthesparsofthetop-gallantmast,itmaybetothetopofthesaidmast—andthat,aswellinlettingthemflyasindrawingthemintodiminishtheirsurfaceinreefingthem.Thencethenecessityofrunningoutonfoot-ropes—movableropesstretchedbelowtheyards—ofworkingwithonehandwhileholdingonbytheother—perilousworkforanyonewhoisnotusedtoit.Theoscillationfromtherollingandpitchingoftheship,verymuchincreasedbythelengthofthelever,theflappingofthesailsunderastiffbreeze,haveoftensentamanoverboard.
