           Numerouswildplantscoveredthebanks,andrelievedthemwithaprofusionofthemostbrilliantcolors.Swallow-wort,iris,lilies,clematis,balsams,umbrella-shapedflowers,aloes,tree-ferns,andspicyshrubsformedaborderofincomparablebrilliancy.Severalforestscametobathetheirbordersintheserapidwaters.Copal-trees,acacias,"bauhinias"ofiron-wood,thetrunkscoveredwithadrossoflichensonthesideexposedtothecoldestwinds,fig-treeswhichroseaboverootsarrangedinrowslikemangroves,andothertreesofmagnificentgrowth,overhungtheriver.
