January28th,1866,LivingstonelandedagainatZanzibar.Hewasbeginninghisfourthvoyage.
August8th,afterhavingwitnessedthehorriblescenesprovokedbytheslave-tradeinthatcountry,thedoctor,takingthistimeonlyafewcipayesandafewnegroes,foundhimselfagainatMokalaose,onthebanksoftheNyassa.Sixweekslater,themajorityofthemenformingtheescorttookflight,returnedtoZanzibar,andtherefalselyspreadthereportofLivingstone’sdeath.
He,however,didnotdrawback.HewishedtovisitthecountrycomprisedbetweentheNyassaandLakeTanganyika.December10th,guidedbysomenatives,hetraversedtheLoangonaRiver,andApril2d,1867,hediscoveredLakeLiemmba.Thereheremainedamonthbetweenlifeanddeath.HardlywellagainAugust30thhereachedLakeMoero,ofwhichhevisitedthenorthernshore,andNovember21stheenteredthetownofCayembe,wherehelivedfortydays,duringwhichhetwicerenewedhisexplorationofLakeMoero.
FromCayembeLivingstonetookanortherndirection,withthedesignofreachingtheimportanttownofOujiji,ontheTanganyika.Surprisedbytherisingofthewaters,andabandonedbyhisguides,hewasobligedtoreturntoCayembe.HeredescendedtothesouthJune6th,andsixweeksaftergainedthegreatlakeBangoneolo.HeremainedtheretillAugust9th,andthensoughttoreascendtowardLakeTanganyika.
