           Suchwasthesituationoftheyoungnoviceandhiscompanionsinbodyandmind.Butwhatevertheymighthavetofearforthemselves,greataswastheirownsufferings,pitytookpossessionofthemonseeingthefrightfulmiseryofthatsadtroopofcaptives,andtherevoltingbrutalityoftheirmasters.Alas!theycoulddonothingtosuccortheafflicted,nothingtoresisttheothers.

           AllthecountrysituatedeastoftheCoanzawasonlyaforestforoveranextentoftwentymiles.Thetrees,however,whethertheyperishunderthebitingofthenumerousinsectsofthesecountries,orwhethertroopsofelephantsbeatthemdownwhiletheyarestillyoung,arelesscrowdedherethaninthecountrynexttotheseacoast.Themarch,then,underthetrees,wouldnotpresentobstacles.Theshrubsmightbemoretroublesomethanthetrees.Therewas,infact,anabundanceofthosecotton-trees,seventoeightfeethigh,thecottonofwhichservestomanufacturetheblackandwhitestripedstuffsusedintheinterioroftheprovince.

           Incertainplaces,thesoiltransformeditselfintothickjungles,inwhichtheconvoydisappeared.
