           The"Pilgrim’s"sailswererapidlyfurled,sothattheshipshouldremainalmostmotionless,lessthanhalfacable’slengthfromthewreck.

           Theboatwasbroughtalongside.CaptainHull,DickSandandtwosailorsgotintoitatonce.

           Thedogbarkedallthetime.Ittriedtoholdontothenetting,buteverymomentitfellbackonthedeck.Onewouldsaythatitsbarkswerenolongeraddressedtothosewhowerecomingtohim.Weretheythenaddressedtosomesailorsorpassengersimprisonedinthisship?

           But,suddenly,thedog’smannerchanged.Furiousbarkssucceededitsfirstbarksinvitingtherescuerstocome.Themostviolentangerexcitedthesingularanimal.

           "Whatcanbethematterwiththatdog?"saidCaptainHull,whiletheboatwasturningthesternofthevessel,soastocomealongsideofthepartofthedecklyingunderthewater.
