           ItwastheterribleAngola,noteventhatpartofthecoastinspectedbythePortugueseauthorities,buttheinteriorofthecolony,whichiscrossedbycaravansofslavesunderthewhipofthedriver.

           WhatdidDickSandknowofthiscountrywheretreasonhadthrownhim?Verylittle;whatthemissionariesofthesixteenthandseventeenthcenturieshadsaidofit;whatthePortuguesemerchants,whofrequentedtheroadfromSt.PauldeLoandatotheZaïre,bywayofSanSalvador,knewofit;whatDr.Livingstonehadwrittenaboutit,afterhisjourneyof1853,andthatwouldhavebeensufficienttooverwhelmasoullessstrongthanhis.
