           Duringthecourseofhisstudies,DickSandshowedaparticularlikingforgeography,forvoyages,whilewaitingtillhewasoldenoughtolearnthatbranchofmathematicswhichrelatestonavigation.Thentothistheoreticalportionofhisinstruction,hedidnotneglecttojointhepractical.Itwasasnovicethathewasabletoembarkforthefirsttimeonthe"Pilgrim."Agoodseamanoughttounderstandfishingaswellasnavigation.Itisagoodpreparationforallthecontingencieswhichthemaritimecareeradmitsof.Besides,DickSandsetoutonavesselofJamesW.Weldon’s,hisbenefactor,commandedbyhisprotector,CaptainHull.Thushefoundhimselfinthemostfavorablecircumstances.

           TospeakoftheextentofhisdevotiontotheWeldonfamily,towhomheowedeverything,wouldbesuperfluous.
