WhetherNegorowasnotamantobefrightened,orwhetherheunderstoodnothingofthethreatsoftheweather,hedidnotappeartobeaffected.However,anevilsmileglidedoverhislips.Onewouldsay,attheendofhisobservations,thatthisstateofthingswasrathercalculatedtopleasehimthantodispleasehim.Onemomenthemountedonthebowspritandcrawledasfarastheropes,soastoextendhisrangeofvision,asifhewereseekingsomeindicationonthehorizon.Thenhedescendedagain,andtranquilly,withouthavingpronouncedasingleword,withouthavingmadeagesture,heregainedthecrew’squarters.
Meanwhile,inthemidstofallthesefearfulconjunctions,thereremainedonehappycircumstancewhicheachoneonboardoughttoremember;itwasthatthiswind,violentasitwasormightbecome,wasfavorable,andthatthe"Pilgrim"seemedtoberapidlymakingtheAmericancoast.If,indeed,theweatherdidnotturntotempest,thisnavigationwouldcontinuetobeaccomplishedwithoutgreatdanger,andtheveritableperilswouldonlyspringupwhenthequestionwouldbetolandonsomebadlyascertainedpointofthecoast.
