           August29.—Mrs.JamesismakingapositivefoolofCarrie.Carrieappearedinanewdresslikeasmock-frock.Shesaid“smocking”wasalltherage.Ireplieditputmeinarage.Shealsohadonahatasbigasakitchencoal-scuttle,andthesameshape.Mrs.Jameswenthome,andbothLupinandIweresomewhatpleased—thefirsttimewehaveagreedonasinglesubjectsincehisreturn.MerkinsandSonwritetheyhavenovacancyforLupin.
