           Noonetookanynoticeofthestupidjoke,andMrs.Jamessuggestedheshouldsitoutforawhile.Gowingconsentedandsatinthearm-chair.

           Thetablebegantomoveagain,andwemighthavehadawonderfulséancebutforGowing’sstupidinterruptions.InanswertothealphabetfromCarriethetablespelt“NIPUL,”thenthe“WARN”threetimes.WecouldnotthinkwhatitmeanttillCummingspointedoutthat“NIPUL”wasLupinspelledbackwards.Thiswasquiteexciting.Carriewasparticularlyexcited,andsaidshehopednothinghorriblewasgoingtohappen.

           Mrs.Jamesaskedif“Lina”wasthespirit.Thetablerepliedfirmly,“No,”andthespiritwouldnotgivehisorhername.Wethenhadthemessage,“NIPULwillbeveryrich.”

           Carriesaidshefeltquiterelieved,buttheword“WARN”wasagainspeltout.Thetablethenbegantooscillateviolently,andinreplytoMrs.James,whospokeverysoftlytothetable,thespiritbegantospellitsname.Itfirstspelled“DRINK.”

           Gowingheresaid:“Ah!that’smoreinmyline.”

           Iaskedhimtobequietasthenamemightnotbecompleted.

           Thetablethenspelt“WATER.”

           Gowinghereinterruptedagain,andsaid:“Ah!that’snotinmyline.Outsideifyoulike,butnotinside.”

           Carrieappealedtohimtobequiet.

           Thetablethenspelt“CAPTAIN,”andMrs.
