CharlesHayterhadmetwithmuchtodisquietandmortifyhiminhiscousin’sbehaviour.Shehadtoooldaregardforhimtobesowhollyestrangedasmightintwomeetingsextinguisheverypasthope,andleavehimnothingtodobuttokeepawayfromUppercross:buttherewassuchachangeasbecameveryalarming,whensuchamanasCaptainWentworthwastoberegardedastheprobablecause.HehadbeenabsentonlytwoSundays,andwhentheyparted,hadleftherinterested,eventotheheightofhiswishes,inhisprospectofsoonquittinghispresentcuracy,andobtainingthatofUppercrossinstead.Ithadthenseemedtheobjectnearestherheart,thatDrShirley,therector,whoformorethanfortyyearshadbeenzealouslydischargingallthedutiesofhisoffice,butwasnowgrowingtooinfirmformanyofthem,shouldbequitefixedonengagingacurate;shouldmakehiscuracyquiteasgoodashecouldafford,andshouldgiveCharlesHayterthepromiseofit.
