           “Ishouldhavethought,”saidAnne,“thatmymannertoyourselfmighthavesparedyoumuchorallofthis.”

           “No,no!yourmannermightbeonlytheeasewhichyourengagementtoanothermanwouldgive.Ileftyouinthisbelief;andyet,Iwasdeterminedtoseeyouagain.Myspiritsralliedwiththemorning,andIfeltthatIhadstillamotiveforremaininghere.”

           AtlastAnnewasathomeagain,andhappierthananyoneinthathousecouldhaveconceived.Allthesurpriseandsuspense,andeveryotherpainfulpartofthemorningdissipatedbythisconversation,shere-enteredthehousesohappyastobeobligedtofindanalloyinsomemomentaryapprehensionsofitsbeingimpossibletolast.Anintervalofmeditation,seriousandgrateful,wasthebestcorrectiveofeverythingdangerousinsuchhigh-wroughtfelicity;andshewenttoherroom,andgrewsteadfastandfearlessinthethankfulnessofherenjoyment.

           Theeveningcame,thedrawing-roomswerelightedup,thecompanyassembled.Itwasbutacardparty,itwasbutamixtureofthosewhohadnevermetbefore,andthosewhomettoooften;acommonplacebusiness,toonumerousforintimacy,toosmallforvariety;butAnnehadneverfoundaneveningshorter.
