Mary,resentingthatsheshouldbesupposednottoknowherowncousin,begantalkingverywarmlyaboutthefamilyfeatures,andprotestingstillmorepositivelythatitwasMrElliot,callingagainuponAnnetocomeandlookforherself,butAnnedidnotmeantostir,andtriedtobecoolandunconcerned.Herdistressreturned,however,onperceivingsmilesandintelligentglancespassbetweentwoorthreeoftheladyvisitors,asiftheybelievedthemselvesquiteinthesecret.Itwasevidentthatthereportconcerningherhadspread,andashortpausesucceeded,whichseemedtoensurethatitwouldnowspreadfarther.
