Thenshehad,indeed,beenapitiableobject;forshehadcaughtcoldonthejourney,andhadhardlytakenpossessionofherlodgingsbeforeshewasagainconfinedtoherbedandsufferingundersevereandconstantpain;andallthisamongstrangers,withtheabsolutenecessityofhavingaregularnurse,andfinancesatthatmomentparticularlyunfittomeetanyextraordinaryexpense.Shehadweatheredit,however,andcouldtrulysaythatithaddonehergood.Ithadincreasedhercomfortsbymakingherfeelherselftobeingoodhands.Shehadseentoomuchoftheworld,toexpectsuddenordisinterestedattachmentanywhere,butherillnesshadprovedtoherthatherlandladyhadacharactertopreserve,andwouldnotuseherill;andshehadbeenparticularlyfortunateinhernurse,asasisterofherlandlady,anursebyprofession,andwhohadalwaysahomeinthathousewhenunemployed,chancedtobeatlibertyjustintimetoattendher.“Andshe,”saidMrsSmith,“besidesnursingmemostadmirably,hasreallyprovedaninvaluableacquaintance.AssoonasIcouldusemyhandsshetaughtmetoknit,whichhasbeenagreatamusement;andsheputmeinthewayofmakingtheselittlethread-cases,pin-cushionsandcard-racks,whichyoualwaysfindmesobusyabout,andwhichsupplymewiththemeansofdoingalittlegoodtooneortwoverypoorfamiliesinthisneighbourhood.Shehadalargeacquaintance,ofcourseprofessionally,amongthosewhocanaffordtobuy,andshedisposesofmymerchandise.Shealwaystakestherighttimeforapplying.
