Anneavoidedadirectreply,butitwasjustthecircumstancewhichsheconsideredasnotmerelyunnecessarytobecommunicated,butaswhatoughttobesuppressed.Theoffencewhichhadbeengivenherfather,manyyearsback,sheknew;Elizabeth’sparticularshareinitshesuspected;andthatMrElliot’sideaalwaysproducedirritationinbothwasbeyondadoubt.
