For,thoughshy,hedidnotseemreserved;ithadrathertheappearanceoffeelingsgladtobursttheirusualrestraints;andhavingtalkedofpoetry,therichnessofthepresentage,andgonethroughabriefcomparisonofopinionastothefirst-ratepoets,tryingtoascertainwhetherMarmionorTheLadyoftheLakeweretobepreferred,andhowrankedtheGiaourandTheBrideofAbydos;andmoreover,howtheGiaourwastobepronounced,heshowedhimselfsointimatelyacquaintedwithallthetenderestsongsoftheonepoet,andalltheimpassioneddescriptionsofhopelessagonyoftheother;herepeated,withsuchtremulousfeeling,thevariouslineswhichimagedabrokenheart,oraminddestroyedbywretchedness,andlookedsoentirelyasifhemeanttobeunderstood,thatsheventuredtohopehedidnotalwaysreadonlypoetry,andtosay,thatshethoughtitwasthemisfortuneofpoetrytobeseldomsafelyenjoyedbythosewhoenjoyeditcompletely;andthatthestrongfeelingswhichalonecouldestimateittrulyweretheveryfeelingswhichoughttotasteitbutsparingly
