           ThatwasoneofthebondsbetweenSallyandhimself.Therewasagardenwheretheyusedtowalk,awalled-inplace,withrose-bushesandgiantcauliflowershecouldrememberSallytearingoffarose,stoppingtoexclaimatthebeautyofthecabbageleavesinthemoonlight(itwasextraordinaryhowvividlyitallcamebacktohim,thingshehadn’tthoughtofforyears,)whilesheimploredhim,halflaughingofcourse,tocarryoffClarissa,tosaveherfromtheHughsandtheDallowaysandalltheother“perfectgentlemen”whowould“stiflehersoul”(shewrotereamsofpoetryinthosedays),makeamerehostessofher,encourageherworldliness.ButonemustdoClarissajustice.Shewasn’tgoingtomarryHughanyhow.Shehadaperfectlyclearnotionofwhatshewanted.Heremotionswereallonthesurface.
