           Uponawaking,andstretchingforthanarm,Ifoundbesidemealoafandapitcherwithwater. Iwastoomuchexhaustedtoreflectuponthiscircumstance,butateanddrankwithavidity. Shortlyafterward,Iresumedmytouraroundtheprison,andwithmuchtoilcameatlastuponthefragmentoftheserge. UptotheperiodwhenIfellIhadcountedfifty-twopaces,anduponresumingmywalk,Ihadcountedforty-eightmore;—whenIarrivedattherag. Therewereinall,then,ahundredpaces;and,admittingtwopacestotheyard,Ipresumedthedungeontobefiftyyardsincircuit. Ihadmet,however,withmanyanglesinthewall,andthusIcouldformnoguessattheshapeofthevault;forvaultIcouldnothelpsupposingittobe. 

           Ihadlittleobject—certainlynohopetheseresearches;butavaguecuriositypromptedmetocontinuethem. Quittingthewall,Iresolvedtocrosstheareaoftheenclosure. AtfirstIproceededwithextremecaution,forthefloor,althoughseeminglyofsolidmaterial,wastreacherouswithslime.
