           “Inowreplacedthenailandregardeditattentively.Apersonpassingoutthroughthiswindowmighthavereclosedit,andthespringwouldhavecaught—butthenailcouldnothavebeenreplaced.Theconclusionwasplain,andagainnarrowedinthefieldofmyinvestigations.Theassassinsmusthaveescapedthroughtheotherwindow.Supposing,then,thespringsuponeachsashtobethesame,aswasprobable,theremustbefoundadifferencebetweenthenails,oratleastbetweenthemodesoftheirfixture.Gettinguponthesackingofthebedstead,Ilookedovertheheadboardminutelyatthesecondcasement.
