           Retracingoursteps,wecameagaintothefrontofthedwelling,rang,and,havingshownourcredentials,wereadmittedbytheagentsincharge.Wewentupstairs—intothechamberwherethebodyofMademoiselleL’Espanayehadbeenfound,andwhereboththedeceasedstilllay.Thedisordersoftheroomhad,asusual,beensufferedtoexist.Isawnothingbeyondwhathadbeenstatedinthe“GazettedesTribunaux.”Dupinscrutinizedeverything-notexceptingthebodiesofthevictims.Wethenwentintotheotherrooms,andintotheyard;agendarmeaccompanyingusthroughout.Theexaminationoccupiedusuntildark,whenwetookourdeparture.Onourwayhomemycompanionstoppedinforamomentattheofficeofoneofthedallypapers.
