           “PaulDumas,physician,deposesthathewascalledtoviewthebodiesaboutday-break.TheywereboththenlyingonthesackingofthebedsteadinthechamberwhereMademoiselleL.wasfound.Thecorpseoftheyoungladywasmuchbruisedandexcoriated.Thefactthatithadbeenthrustupthechimneywouldsufficientlyaccountfortheseappearances.Thethroatwasgreatlychafed.Therewereseveraldeepscratchesjustbelowthechin,togetherwithaseriesoflividspotswhichwereevidentlytheimpressionoffingers.Thefacewasfearfullydiscolored,andtheeye-ballsprotruded.Thetonguehadbeenpartiallybittenthrough.Alargebruisewasdiscovereduponthepitofthestomach,produced,apparently,bythepressureofaknee.IntheopinionofM.Dumas,MademoiselleL’Espanayehadbeenthrottledtodeathbysomepersonorpersonsunknown.Thecorpseofthemotherwashorriblymutilated.Allthebonesoftherightlegandarmweremoreorlessshattered.Thelefttibiamuchsplintered,aswellasalltheribsoftheleftside.Wholebodydreadfullybruisedanddiscolored.Itwasnotpossibletosayhowtheinjurieshadbeeninflicted.
