           “Fouroftheabove-namedwitnesses,beingrecalled,deposedthatthedoorofthechamberinwhichwasfoundthebodyofMademoiselleL.waslockedontheinsidewhenthepartyreachedit.Everythingwasperfectlysilent—nogroansornoisesofanykind.Uponforcingthedoornopersonwasseen.Thewindows,bothofthebackandfrontroom,weredownandfirmlyfastenedfromwithin.Adoorbetweenthetworoomswasclosed,butnotlocked.Thedoorleadingfromthefrontroomintothepassagewaslocked,withthekeyontheinside.Asmallroominthefrontofthehouse,onthefourthstory,attheheadofthepassage,wasopen,thedoorbeingajar.Thisroomwascrowdedwitholdbeds,boxes,andsoforth.Thesewerecarefullyremovedandsearched.Therewasnotaninchofanyportionofthehousewhichwasnotcarefullysearched.Sweepsweresentupanddownthechimneys.Thehousewasafourstoryone,withgarrets(mansardes).Atrap-doorontheroofwasnaileddownverysecurely—didnotappeartohavebeenopenedforyears.
