           “Whoknows?”hesaid,astheyliftedtheirglasses.“WhenyoucomenextyearImayhavethepleasureofwishinglonglifeandhappinesstoMr.andMrs.IgnatiusGallaher.”

           IgnatiusGallaherintheactofdrinkingclosedoneeyeexpressivelyovertherimofhisglass.Whenhehaddrunkhesmackedhislipsdecisively,setdownhisglassandsaid:

           “Nobloomingfearofthat,myboy.I’mgoingtohavemyflingfirstandseeabitoflifeandtheworldbeforeIputmyheadinthesackifIeverdo.”

           “Somedayyouwill,”saidLittleChandlercalmly.

           IgnatiusGallaherturnedhisorangetieandslate-blueeyesfulluponhisfriend.

           “Youthinkso?”hesaid.

           “You’llputyourheadinthesack,”repeatedLittleChandlerstoutly,“likeeveryoneelseifyoucanfindthegirl.”

           Hehadslightlyemphasisedhistoneandhewasawarethathehadbetrayedhimself;but,thoughthecolourhadheightenedinhischeek,hedidnotflinchfromhisfriend’sgaze.IgnatiusGallaherwatchedhimforafewmomentsandthensaid:

           “Ifeveritoccurs,youmaybetyourbottomdollarthere’llbenomooningandspooningaboutit.Imeantomarrymoney.She’llhaveagoodfataccountatthebankorshewon’tdoforme.”
