           Therewasaheavyodourintheroomtheflowers.

           Wecrossedourselvesandcameaway.InthelittleroomdownstairswefoundElizaseatedinhisarm-chairinstate.IgropedmywaytowardsmyusualchairinthecornerwhileNanniewenttothesideboardandbroughtoutadecanterofsherryandsomewine-glasses.Shesettheseonthetableandinvitedustotakealittleglassofwine.Then,athersister’sbidding,shefilledoutthesherryintotheglassesandpassedthemtous.ShepressedmetotakesomecreamcrackersalsobutIdeclinedbecauseIthoughtIwouldmaketoomuchnoiseeatingthem.Sheseemedtobesomewhatdisappointedatmyrefusalandwentoverquietlytothesofawhereshesatdownbehindhersister.Noonespoke:weallgazedattheemptyfireplace.

           MyauntwaiteduntilElizasighedandthensaid:

           “Ah,well,he’sgonetoabetterworld.”

           Elizasighedagainandbowedherheadinassent.Myauntfingeredthestemofherwine-glassbeforesippingalittle.

           “Didhe...peacefully?”sheasked.

           “Oh,quitepeacefully,ma’am,”saidEliza.“Youcouldn’ttellwhenthebreathwentoutofhim.Hehadabeautifuldeath,Godbepraised.”

           “Andeverything...?”

           “FatherO’RourkewasinwithhimaTuesdayandanointedhimandpreparedhimandall.”

           “Heknewthen?”

           “Hewasquiteresigned.
