           MaryJanegazedafterher,amoodypuzzledexpressiononherface,whileMrs.Conroyleanedoverthebanisterstolistenforthehall-door.Gabrielaskedhimselfwashethecauseofherabruptdeparture.Butshedidnotseemtobeinillhumour:shehadgoneawaylaughing.Hestaredblanklydownthestaircase.
