           Thebaritonehadnotseenherbuthehadbeentoldthatshewasveryfine.Theconversationwentnofurther.Thefirsttenorbenthisheadandbegantocountthelinksofthegoldchainwhichwasextendedacrosshiswaist,smilingandhummingrandomnotestoobservetheeffectonthefrontalsinus.FromtimetotimeeveryoneglancedatMrs.Kearney.

           ThenoiseintheauditoriumhadrisentoaclamourwhenMr.Fitzpatrickburstintotheroom,followedbyMr.Holohanwhowaspanting.Theclappingandstampinginthehallwerepunctuatedbywhistling.Mr.Fitzpatrickheldafewbanknotesinhishand.HecountedoutfourintoMrs.Kearney’shandandsaidshewouldgettheotherhalfattheinterval.Mrs.Kearneysaid:

           ThefirstpartoftheconcertwasverysuccessfulexceptforMadamGlynn’sitem.ThepoorladysangKillarneyinabodilessgaspingvoice,withalltheold-fashionedmannerismsofintonationandpronunciationwhichshebelievedlentelegancetohersinging.
