           “You’dbetterspeaktoMr.Fitzpatrick,”saidMr.Holohandistantly.

           “Idon’tknowanythingaboutMr.Fitzpatrick,”repeatedMrs.Kearney.“Ihavemycontract,andIintendtoseethatitiscarriedout.”

           Whenshecamebacktothedressing-roomhercheekswereslightlysuffused.Theroomwaslively.TwomeninoutdoordresshadtakenpossessionofthefireplaceandwerechattingfamiliarlywithMissHealyandthebaritone.TheyweretheFreemanmanandMr.O’MaddenBurke.TheFreemanmanhadcomeintosaythathecouldnotwaitfortheconcertashehadtoreportthelecturewhichanAmericanpriestwasgivingintheMansionHouse.HesaidtheyweretoleavethereportforhimattheFreemanofficeandhewouldseethatitwentin.Hewasagrey-hairedman,withaplausiblevoiceandcarefulmanners.Heheldanextinguishedcigarinhishandandthearomaofcigarsmokefloatednearhim.
