           “Whichismybottle?”heasked.

           “This,lad,”saidMr.Henchy.

           Mr.Croftonsatdownonaboxandlookedfixedlyattheotherbottleonthehob.Hewassilentfortworeasons.Thefirstreason,sufficientinitself,wasthathehadnothingtosay;thesecondreasonwasthatheconsideredhiscompanionsbeneathhim.HehadbeenacanvasserforWilkins,theConservative,butwhentheConservativeshadwithdrawntheirmanand,choosingthelesseroftwoevils,giventheirsupporttotheNationalistcandidate,hehadbeenengagedtoworkforMr.Tiemey.

           Inafewminutesanapologetic“Pok!”washeardasthecorkflewoutofMr.Lyons’bottle.Mr.Lyonsjumpedoffthetable,wenttothefire,tookhisbottleandcarrieditbacktothetable.

           “Whodidyouget?”askedMr.Lyons.

           “Well,IgotParkesforone,andIgotAtkinsonfortwo,andgotWardofDawsonStreet.Fineoldchapheis,tooregularoldtoff,oldConservative!‘Butisn’tyourcandidateaNationalist?’saidhe.
