           ButwhentherestraininginfluenceoftheschoolwasatadistanceIbegantohungeragainforwildsensations,fortheescapewhichthosechroniclesofdisorderaloneseemedtoofferme.ThemimicwarfareoftheeveningbecameatlastaswearisometomeastheroutineofschoolinthemorningbecauseIwantedrealadventurestohappentomyself.Butrealadventures,Ireflected,donothappentopeoplewhoremainathome:theymustbesoughtabroad.

           ThesummerholidayswerenearathandwhenImadeupmymindtobreakoutofthewearinessofschoollifeforonedayatleast.WithLeoDillonandaboynamedMahonyIplannedaday’smiching.Eachofussavedupsixpence.WeweretomeetatteninthemorningontheCanalBridge.Mahony’sbigsisterwastowriteanexcuseforhimandLeoDillonwastotellhisbrothertosayhewassick.WearrangedtogoalongtheWharfRoaduntilwecametotheships,thentocrossintheferryboatandwalkouttoseethePigeonHouse.LeoDillonwasafraidwemightmeetFatherButlerorsomeoneoutofthecollege;butMahonyasked,verysensibly,whatwouldFatherButlerbedoingoutatthePigeonHouse.Wewerereassured:andIbroughtthefirststageoftheplottoanendbycollectingsixpencefromtheothertwo,atthesametimeshowingthemmyownsixpence.Whenweweremakingthelastarrangementsontheevewewereallvaguelyexcited.Weshookhands,laughing,andMahonysaid:

           “Tilltomorrow,mates!”

           ThatnightIsleptbadly.
