           CharlesGouldfoundthedoctorstillinhishouse.

           Dr.Monyghamcameawayfromthecrackintheshutterthroughwhichhehadbeenwatchingthestreet.

           “Ah!Youarebackatlast!”hesaidinatoneofrelief.“IhavebeentellingMrs.Gouldthatyouwereperfectlysafe,butIwasnotbyanymeanscertainthatthefellowwouldhaveletyougo.”

           “NeitherwasI,”confessedCharlesGould,layinghishatonthetable.

           “Youwillhavetotakeaction.”

           ThesilenceofCharlesGouldseemedtoadmitthatthiswastheonlycourse.ThiswasasfarasCharlesGouldwasaccustomedtogotowardsexpressinghisintentions.

           “IhopeyoudidnotwarnMonteroofwhatyoumeantodo,”thedoctorsaid,anxiously.

           “Itriedtomakehimseethattheexistenceoftheminewasboundupwithmypersonalsafety,”continuedCharlesGould,lookingawayfromthedoctor,andfixinghiseyesuponthewater-coloursketchuponthewall.

           “Hebelievedyou?”thedoctorasked,eagerly.

           “Godknows!”saidCharlesGould.“Iowedittomywifetosaythatmuch.Heiswellenoughinformed.HeknowsthatIhaveDonPepethere.Fuentesmusthavetoldhim.TheyknowthattheoldmajorisperfectlycapableofblowinguptheSanTomeminewithouthesitationorcompunction.HaditnotbeenforthatIdon’tthinkI’dhavelefttheIntendenciaafreeman.
