‘IsupposeImusthavefallenintoasentimentalmood;IonlyknowthatIstoodtherelongenoughforthesenseofuttersolitudetogetholdofmesocompletelythatallIhadlatelyseen,allIhadheard,andtheveryhumanspeechitself,seemedtohavepassedawayoutofexistence,livingonlyforawhilelongerinmymemory,asthoughIhadbeenthelastofmankind.Itwasastrangeandmelancholyillusion,evolvedhalf-consciouslylikeallourillusions,whichIsuspectonlytobevisionsofremoteunattainabletruth,seendimly.Thiswas,indeed,oneofthelost,forgotten,unknownplacesoftheearth;Ihadlookedunderitsobscuresurface;andIfeltthatwhento-morrowIhadleftitforever,itwouldslipoutofexistence,toliveonlyinmymemorytillImyselfpassedintooblivion.Ihavethatfeelingaboutmenow;perhapsitisthatfeelingwhichhasincitedmetotellyouthestory,totrytohandovertoyou,asitwere,itsveryexistence,itsreality—thetruthdisclosedinamomentofillusion.
