Wehaveheardsomanysuchstories,andthemajorityofusdon’tbelievethemtobestoriesofloveatall.Forthemostpartwelookuponthemasstoriesofopportunities:episodesofpassionatbest,orperhapsonlyofyouthandtemptation,doomedtoforgetfulnessintheend,eveniftheypassthroughtherealityoftendernessandregret.Thisviewmostlyisright,andperhapsinthiscasetoo....YetIdon’tknow.Totellthisstoryisbynomeanssoeasyasitshouldbe—weretheordinarystandpointadequate.Apparentlyitisastoryverymuchliketheothers:forme,however,thereisvisibleinitsbackgroundthemelancholyfigureofawoman,theshadowofacruelwisdomburiedinalonelygrave,lookingonwistfully,helplessly,withsealedlips.Thegraveitself,asIcameuponitduringanearlymorningstroll,wasarathershapelessbrownmound,withaninlaidneatborderofwhitelumpsofcoralatthebase,andenclosedwithinacircularfencemadeofsplitsaplings,withthebarklefton.Agarlandofleavesandflowerswaswovenabouttheheadsoftheslenderposts—andtheflowerswerefresh.
