Didthislittlemanconcernmeinanyway?Notintheleast,notintheveryslightestdegree!Onlythatheheldanewspaperinhishand,anoldnumber(withtheadvertisementsheetontheoutside),inwhichsomethingorotherseemedtoberolledup;mycuriositywasaroused,andIcouldnottakemyeyesawayfromthispaper.Theinsaneideaenteredmyheadthatitmightbeaquitepeculiarnewspaper—uniqueofitskind.Mycuriosityincreased,andIbegantomovebackwardsandforwardsontheseat.Itmightcontaindeeds,dangerousdocumentsstolenfromsomearchiveorother;somethingfloatedbeforemeaboutasecrettreaty—aconspiracy.
Themansatquietly,andpondered.Whydidhenotcarryhisnewspaperaseveryotherpersoncarriesapaper,withitsnameout?Whatspeciesofcunninglurkedunderthat?Hedidnotseemeithertolikelettinghispackageoutofhishands,notforanythingintheworld;perhapshedidnotevendaretrustitintohisownpocket.Icouldstakemylifetherewassomethingatthebottomofthatpackage—Iconsideredabit.Justthefactoffindingitsoimpossibletopenetratethismysteriousaffairdistractedmewithcuriosity.Isearchedmypocketsforsomethingtoofferthemaninordertoenterintoconversationwithhim,tookholdofmyshaving-book,butputitbackagain.
