Hetookataxitothecathedral,atthelastmomenthehadrememberedthealbumthathehadhadnoopportunitytogivetotheItalianearlierandsotookitwithhimnow.Hehelditonhiskneesanddrummedimpatientlyonitduringthewholejourney.Therainhadeasedoffslightlybutitwasstilldampchillyanddark,itwouldbedifficulttoseeanythinginthecathedralbutstandingaboutoncoldflagstonesmightwellmakeK.’schillmuchworse.Thesquareinfrontofthecathedralwasquiteempty,K.rememberedhowevenasasmallchildhehadnoticedthatnearlyallthehousesinthisnarrowsquarehadthecurtainsattheirwindowsclosedmostofthetime,althoughtoday,withtheweatherlikethis,itwasmoreunderstandable.Thecathedralalsoseemedquiteempty,ofcourseno-onewouldthinkofgoingthereonadaylikethis.K.hurriedalongboththesidenavesbutsawno-onebutanoldwomanwho,wrappedupinawarmshawl,waskneelingatapictureoftheVirginMaryandstaringupatit.Then,inthedistance,hesawachurchofficialwholimpedawaythroughadoorwayinthewall.K.hadarrivedontime,ithadstrucktenjustashewasenteringthebuilding,buttheItalianstillwasnotthere.K.wentbacktothemainentrance,stoodthereindecisivelyforawhile,andthenwalkedroundthecathedralintherainincasetheItalianwaswaitingatanotherentrance.Hewasnowheretobefound.Couldthedirectorhavemisunderstoodwhattimetheyhadagreedon?Howcouldanyoneunderstandsomeonelikethatproperlyanyway?Whateverhadhappened,K.
