Thepainterhadpulledhisseatclosertothebedandcontinuedinasubduedvoice:"Iforgottoaskyou;whatsortofacquittalisityouwant?Therearethreepossibilities;absoluteacquittal,apparentacquittalanddeferment.Absoluteacquittalisthebest,ofcourse,onlythere’snothingIcoulddotogetthatsortofoutcome.Idon’tthinkthere’sanyoneatallwhocoulddoanythingtogetanabsoluteacquittal.Probablytheonlythingthatcoulddothatisiftheaccusedisinnocent.Asyouareinnocentitcouldactuallybepossibleandyoucoulddependonyourinnocencealone.Inthatcaseyouwon’tneedmeoranyotherkindofhelp."
