MissMontagfollowedhimafewpaces,asifshedidnotquitetrusthim.Atthedoor,however,bothofthemhadtostepbackasitopenedandCaptainLanzentered.ThiswasthefirsttimethatK.hadseenhimcloseup.Hewasalargemanofaboutfortywithatanned,fleshyface.Hebowedslightly,intendingitalsoforK.,andthenwentovertoMissMontaganddeferentiallykissedherhand.Hewasveryelegantinthewayhemoved.ThecourtesyheshowedtowardsMissMontagmadeastrikingcontrastwiththewayshehadbeentreatedbyK.Nonetheless,MissMontagdidnotseemtobecrosswithK.asitevenseemedtohimthatshewantedtointroducethecaptain.K.however,didnotwanttobeintroduced,hewouldnothavebeenabletoshowanysortoffriendlinesseithertoMissMontagortothecaptain,thekissonthehandhad,forK.,boundthemintoagroupwhichwouldkeephimatadistancefromMissBürstnerwhilstatthesametimeseemingtobetotallyharmlessandunselfish.K.thought,however,thathesawmorethanthat,hethoughthealsosawthatMissMontaghadchosenameansofdoingitthatwasgood,buttwo-edged.SheexaggeratedtheimportanceoftherelationshipbetweenK.andMissBürstner,andaboveallsheexaggeratedtheimportanceofaskingtospeakwithherandshetriedatthesametimetomakeoutthatK.wasexaggeratingeverything.Shewouldbedisappointed,K.didnotwanttoexaggerateanything,hewasawarethatMissBürstnerwasalittletypistwhowouldnotofferhimmuchresistanceforlong.
