           Whilethetwocrewswereyetcirclinginthewaters,reachingoutaftertherevolvingline-tubs,oars,andotherfloatingfurniture,whileaslopelittleFlaskbobbedupanddownlikeanemptyvial,twitchinghislegsupwardstoescapethedreadedjawsofsharks;andStubbwaslustilysingingoutforsomeonetoladlehimup;andwhiletheoldman’slinenowpartingadmittedofhispullingintothecreamypooltorescuewhomhecould;inthatwildsimultaneousnessofathousandconcretedperilsAhab’syetunstrickenboatseemeddrawnuptowardsHeavenbyinvisiblewiresas,arrow-like,shootingperpendicularlyfromthesea,theWhiteWhaledashedhisbroadforeheadagainstitsbottom,andsentitturningoverandover,intotheair;tillitfellagaingunwaledownandAhabandhismenstruggledoutfromunderit,likesealsfromasea-sidecave.

           Thefirstuprisingmomentumofthewhalemodifyingitsdirectionashestruckthesurfaceinvoluntarilylaunchedhimalongit,toalittledistancefromthecentreofthedestructionhehadmade;andwithhisbacktoit,henowlayforamomentslowlyfeelingwithhisflukesfromsidetoside;andwheneverastrayoar,bitofplank,theleastchiporcrumboftheboatstouchedhisskin,histailswiftlydrewback,andcamesidewayssmitingthesea.Butsoon,asifsatisfiedthathisworkforthattimewasdone,hepushedhispleatedforeheadthroughtheocean,andtrailingafterhimtheintertangledlines,continuedhisleewardwayatatraveller’smethodicpace.
