Thefirstuprisingmomentumofthewhale—modifyingitsdirectionashestruckthesurface—involuntarilylaunchedhimalongit,toalittledistancefromthecentreofthedestructionhehadmade;andwithhisbacktoit,henowlayforamomentslowlyfeelingwithhisflukesfromsidetoside;andwheneverastrayoar,bitofplank,theleastchiporcrumboftheboatstouchedhisskin,histailswiftlydrewback,andcamesidewayssmitingthesea.Butsoon,asifsatisfiedthathisworkforthattimewasdone,hepushedhispleatedforeheadthroughtheocean,andtrailingafterhimtheintertangledlines,continuedhisleewardwayatatraveller’smethodicpace.
