           Butsoonresuminghishorizontalattitude,MobyDickswamswiftlyroundandroundthewreckedcrew;sidewayschurningthewaterinhisvengefulwake,asiflashinghimselfuptostillanotherandmoredeadlyassault.Thesightofthesplinteredboatseemedtomaddenhim,asthebloodofgrapesandmulberriescastbeforeAntiochus’selephantsinthebookofMaccabees.MeanwhileAhabhalfsmotheredinthefoamofthewhale’sinsolenttail,andtoomuchofacrippletoswimthoughhecouldstillkeepafloat,evenintheheartofsuchawhirlpoolasthat;helplessAhab’sheadwasseen,likeatossedbubblewhichtheleastchanceshockmightburst.Fromtheboat’sfragmentarystern,Fedallahincuriouslyandmildlyevedhim;theclingingcrew,attheotherdriftingend,couldnotsuccorhim;morethanenoughwasitforthemtolooktothemselves.ForsorevolvinglyappallingwastheWhiteWhale’saspect,andsoplanetarilyswifttheever-contractingcircleshemade,thatheseemedhorizontallyswoopinguponthem.Andthoughtheotherboats,unharmed,stillhoveredhardby;stilltheydarednotpullintotheeddytostrike,lestthatshouldbethesignalfortheinstantdestructionofthejeopardizedcastaways,Ahabandall;norinthatcasecouldtheythemselveshopetoescape.Withstrainingeyes,then,theyremainedontheouteredgeofthedirefulzone,whosecentrehadnowbecometheoldman’shead.
