           Butasifperceivingthisstratagem,MobyDick,withthatmaliciousintelligenceascribedtohim,sidelinglytransplantedhimself,asitwere,inaninstant,shootinghispleatedheadlengthwisebeneaththeboat.

           Throughandthrough;througheveryplankandeachrib,itthrilledforaninstant,thewhaleobliquelylyingonhisback,inthemannerofabitingsharkslowlyandfeelinglytakingitsbowsfullwithinhismouth,sothatthelong,narrow,scrolledlowerjawcurledhighupintotheopenair,andoneoftheteethcaughtinarow-lock.Thebluishpearl-whiteoftheinsideofthejawwaswithinsixinchesofAhab’shead,andreachedhigherthanthat.InthisattitudetheWhiteWhalenowshooktheslightcedarasamildlycruelcathermouse.WithunastonishedeyesFedallahgazed,andcrossedhisarms;butthetiger-yellowcrewweretumblingovereachother’sheadstogaintheuttermoststern.

           Andnow,whilebothelasticgunwaleswerespringinginandout,asthewhaledalliedwiththedoomedcraftinthisdevilishway;andfromhisbodybeingsubmergedbeneaththeboat,hecouldnotbedartedatfromthebows,forthebowswerealmostinsideofhim,asitwere;andwhiletheotherboatsinvoluntarilypaused,asbeforeaquickcrisisimpossibletowithstand,thenitwasthatmonomaniacAhab,furiouswiththistantalizingvicinityofhisfoe,whichplacedhimallaliveandhelplessintheveryjawshehated;frenziedwithallthis,heseizedthelongbonewithhisnakedhands,andwildlystrovetowrenchfromitsgripe.
