Stubb Kills a Whale

           "Wettheline!wettheline!"criedStubbtothetuboarsman(himseatedbythetub)who,snatchingoffhishat,dashedsea-waterintoit.Moreturnsweretaken,sothatthelinebeganholdingitsplace.Theboatnowflewthroughtheboilingwaterlikeasharkallfins.StubbandTashtegoherechangedplacesstemforsternastaggeringbusinesstrulyinthatrockingcommotion.

           Fromthevibratinglineextendingtheentirelengthoftheupperpartoftheboat,andfromitsnowbeingmoretightthanaharpstring,youwouldhavethoughtthecrafthadtwokeelsonecleavingthewater,theothertheairastheboatchurnedonthroughbothopposingelementsatonce.Acontinualcascadeplayedatthebows;aceaselesswhirlingeddyinherwake;and,attheslightestmotionfromwithin,evenbutofalittlefinger,thevibrating,crackingcraftcantedoverherspasmodicgunwaleintothesea.Thustheyrushed;eachmanwithmightandmainclingingtohisseat,topreventbeingtossedtothefoam;andthetallformofTashtegoatthesteeringoarcrouchingalmostdouble,inordertobringdownhiscentreofgravity.
