           Toalandsman,nowhale,noranysignofaherring,wouldhavebeenvisibleatthatmoment;nothingbutatroubledbitofgreenishwhitewater,andthinscatteredpuffsofvaporhoveringoverit,andsuffusinglyblowingofftoleeward,liketheconfusedscudfromwhiterollingbillows.Theairaroundsuddenlyvibratedandtingled,asitwere,liketheairoverintenselyheatedplatesofiron.Beneaththisatmosphericwavingandcurling,andpartiallybeneathathinlayerofwater,also,thewhaleswereswimming.Seeninadvanceofalltheotherindications,thepuffsofvaportheyspouted,seemedtheirforerunningcouriersanddetachedflyingoutriders.

           Allfourboatswerenowinkeenpursuitofthatonespotoftroubledwaterandair.Butitbadefaroutstripthem;itflewonandon,amassofinterblendingbubblesbornedownarapidstreamfromthehills.
