           CaptainLangsdorffthusbeginshisseventeenthchapter:

           "BythethirteenthofMayourshipwasreadytosail,andthenextdaywewereoutintheopensea,onourwaytoOchotsh.Theweatherwasveryclearandfine,butsointolerablycoldthatwewereobligedtokeeponourfurclothing.Forsomedayswehadverylittlewind;itwasnottillthenineteenththatabriskgalefromthenorthwestsprangup.Anuncommonlylargewhale,thebodyofwhichwaslargerthantheshipitself,layalmostatthesurfaceofthewater,butwasnotperceivedbyanyoneonboardtillthemomentwhentheship,whichwasinfullsail,wasalmostuponhim,sothatitwasimpossibletopreventitsstrikingagainsthim.Wewerethusplacedinthemostimminentdanger,asthisgiganticcreature,settingupitsback,raisedtheshipthreefeetatleastoutofthewater.Themastsreeled,andthesailsfellaltogether,whilewewhowerebelowallspranginstantlyuponthedeck,concludingthatwehadstruckuponsomerock;insteadofthiswesawthemonstersailingoffwiththeutmostgravityandsolemnity.CaptainD’Wolfappliedimmediatelytothepumpstoexaminewhetherornotthevesselhadreceivedanydamagefromtheshock,butwefoundthatveryhappilyithadescapedentirelyuninjured."

           Now,theCaptainD’Wolfherealludedtoascommandingtheshipinquestion,isaNewEnglander,who,afteralonglifeofunusualadventuresasasea-captain,thisdayresidesinthevillageofDorchesternearBoston.Ihavethehonorofbeinganephewofhis.
