           Iknowthat,tothecommonapprehension,thisphenomenonofwhitenessisnotconfessedtobetheprimeagentinexaggeratingtheterrorofobjectsotherwiseterrible;nortotheunimaginativemindisthereaughtofterrorinthoseappearanceswhoseawfulnesstoanothermindalmostsolelyconsistsinthisonephenomenon,especiallywhenexhibitedunderanyformatallapproachingtomutenessoruniversality.WhatImeanbythesetwostatementsmayperhapsberespectivelyelucidatedbythefollowingexamples.

           First:Themariner,whendrawingnighthecoastsofforeignlands,ifbynightheheartheroarofbreakers,startstovigilance,andfeelsjustenoughoftrepidationtosharpenallhisfaculties;butunderpreciselysimilarcircumstances,lethimbecalledfromhishammocktoviewhisshipsailingthroughamidnightseaofmilkywhitenessasiffromencirclingheadlandsshoalsofcombedwhitebearswereswimmingroundhim,thenhefeelsasilent,superstitiousdread;theshroudedphantomofthewhitenedwatersishorribletohimasarealghost;invaintheleadassureshimheisstilloffsoundings;heartandhelmtheybothgodown;heneverreststillbluewaterisunderhimagain.Yetwhereisthemarinerwhowilltellthee,"Sir,itwasnotsomuchthefearofstrikinghiddenrocks,asthefearofthathideouswhitenessthatsostirredme?"

           Second:TothenativeIndianofPeru,thecontinualsightofthesnowhowdahedAndesconveysnaughtofdread,except,perhaps,inthemerefancyingoftheeternalfrosteddesolatenessreigningatsuchvastaltitudes,andthenaturalconceitofwhatafearfulnessitwouldbetoloseoneselfinsuchinhumansolitude.
