           Nordidwildrumorsofallsortsfailtoexaggerate,andstillthemorehorrifythetruehistoriesofthesedeadlyencounters.Fornotonlydofabulousrumorsnaturallygrowoutoftheverybodyofallsurprisingterribleeventsasthesmittentreegivesbirthtoitsfungi;but,inmaritimelife,farmorethaninthatofterrafirma,wildrumorsabound,whereverthereisanyadequaterealityforthemtoclingto.Andastheseasurpassesthelandinthismatter,sothewhalefisherysurpasseseveryothersortofmaritimelife,inthewonderfulnessandfearfulnessoftherumorswhichsometimescirculatethere.Fornotonlyarewhalemenasabodyunexemptfromthatignoranceandsuperstitiousnesshereditarytoallsailors;butofallsailors,theyarebyalloddsthemostdirectlybroughtintocontactwithwhateverisappallinglyastonishinginthesea;facetofacetheynotonlyeyeitsgreatestmarvels,but,handtojaw,givebattletothem.Alone,insuchremotestwaters,thatthoughyousailedathousandmiles,andpassedathousandshores,youwouldnotcometoanychiselledhearth-stone,oraughthospitablebeneaththatpartofthesun;insuchlatitudesandlongitudes,pursuingtoosuchacallingashedoes,thewhalemaniswrappedbyinfluencesalltendingtomakehisfancypregnantwithmanyamightybirth.
