Heis,withoutdoubt,thelargestinhabitantoftheglobe;themostformidableofallwhalestoencounter;themostmajesticinaspect;andlastly,byfarthemostvaluableincommerce;hebeingtheonlycreaturefromwhichthatvaluablesubstance,spermaceti,isobtained.Allhispeculiaritieswill,inmanyotherplaces,beenlargedupon.ItischieflywithhisnamethatInowhavetodo.Philologicallyconsidered,itisabsurd.Somecenturiesago,whenthespermwhalewasalmostwhollyunknowninhisownproperindividuality,andwhenhisoilwasonlyaccidentallyobtainedfromthestrandedfish;inthosedaysspermaceti,itwouldseem,waspopularlysupposedtobederivedfromacreatureidenticalwiththeonethenknowninEnglandastheGreenlandorRightWhale.Itwastheideaalso,thatthissamespermacetiwasthatquickeninghumoroftheGreenlandWhalewhichthefirstsyllableofthewordliterallyexpresses.Inthosetimes,also,spermacetiwasexceedinglyscarce,notbeingusedforlight,butonlyasanointmentandmedicament.Itwasonlytobehadfromthedruggistsasyounowadaysbuyanounceofrhubarb.When,asIopine,inthecourseoftime,thetruenatureofspermacetibecameknown,itsoriginalnamewasstillretainedbythedealers;nodoubttoenhanceitsvaluebyanotionsostrangelysignificantofitsscarcity.Andsotheappellationmustatlasthavecometobebestoweduponthewhalefromwhichthisspermacetiwasreallyderived.
