           TheyfoundMr.Laurencestandingbeforethefireinthegreatdrawingroom,butJo’sattentionwasentirelyabsorbedbyagrandpiano,whichstoodopen.

           "Doyouplay?"sheasked,turningtoLauriewitharespectfulexpression.

           "Sometimes,"heansweredmodestly.

           "Pleasedonow.Iwanttohearit,soIcantellBeth."

           "Won’tyoufirst?"

           "Don’tknowhow.Toostupidtolearn,butIlovemusicdearly."

           SoLaurieplayedandJolistened,withhernoseluxuriouslyburiedinheliotropeandtearoses.Herrespectandregardforthe‘Laurence’boyincreasedverymuch,forheplayedremarkablywellanddidn’tputonanyairs.
