           Inspiteofthenewsorrow,itwasaveryhappytime,sohappythatLauriecouldnotbeartodisturbitbyaword.Ittookhimalittlewhiletorecoverfromhissurpriseatthecureofhisfirst,andashehadfirmlybelieved,hislastandonlylove.HeconsoledhimselffortheseemingdisloyaltybythethoughtthatJo’ssisterwasalmostthesameasJo’sself,andtheconvictionthatitwouldhavebeenimpossibletoloveanyotherwomanbutAmysosoonandsowell.Hisfirstwooinghadbeenofthetempestuousorder,andhelookedbackuponitasifthroughalongvistaofyearswithafeelingofcompassionblendedwithregret.Hewasnotashamedofit,butputitawayasoneofthebitter-sweetexperiencesofhislife,forwhichhecouldbegratefulwhenthepainwasover.Hissecondwooing,heresolved,shouldbeascalmandsimpleaspossible.Therewasnoneedofhavingascene,hardlyanyneedoftellingAmythathelovedher,sheknewitwithoutwordsandhadgivenhimhisanswerlongago.Itallcameaboutsonaturallythatnoonecouldcomplain,andheknewthateverybodywouldbepleased,evenJo.Butwhenourfirstlittlepassionhasbeencrushed,weareapttobewaryandslowinmakingasecondtrial,soLaurieletthedayspass,enjoyingeveryhour,andleavingtochancetheutteranceofthewordthatwouldputanendtothefirstandsweetestpartofhisnewromance.
