OfcourseIcouldn’tsayanythingafterthat,andasitreallyisasplendidopportunity,Imadethebargain,andwebegan.Itookfourlessons,andthenIstuckfastinagrammaticalbog.TheProfessorwasverypatientwithme,butitmusthavebeentormenttohim,andnowandthenhe’dlookatmewithsuchanexpressionofmilddespairthatitwasatoss-upwithmewhethertolaughorcry.Itriedbothways,andwhenitcametoasnifforuttermortificationandwoe,hejustthrewthegrammarontothefloorandmarchedoutoftheroom.Ifeltmyselfdisgracedanddesertedforever,butdidn’tblamehimaparticle,andwasscramblingmypaperstogether,meaningtorushupstairsandshakemyselfhard,wheninhecame,asbriskandbeamingasifI’dcoveredmyselfinglory.
