Thecommanderinchiefandhisaidessoonspreadthetableclothwithaninvitingarrayofeatablesanddrinkables,prettilydecoratedwithgreenleaves.Joannouncedthatthecoffeewasready,andeveryonesettledthemselvestoaheartymeal,foryouthisseldomdyspeptic,andexercisedevelopswholesomeappetites.Averymerrylunchitwas,foreverythingseemedfreshandfunny,andfrequentpealsoflaughterstartledavenerablehorsewhofednearby.Therewasapleasinginequalityinthetable,whichproducedmanymishapstocupsandplates,acornsdroppedinthemilk,littleblackantspartookoftherefreshmentswithoutbeinginvited,andfuzzycaterpillarsswungdownfromthetreetoseewhatwasgoingon.Threewhite-headedchildrenpeepedoverthefence,andanobjectionabledogbarkedatthemfromtheothersideoftheriverwithallhismightandmain.
