           "Areyousuresheissafe?"whisperedJo,lookingremorsefullyatthegoldenhead,whichmighthavebeensweptawayfromhersightforeverunderthetreacherousice.

           "Quitesafe,dear.Sheisnothurt,andwon’teventakecold,Ithink,youweresosensibleincoveringandgettingherhomequickly,"repliedhermothercheerfully.

           "Lauriediditall.Ionlylethergo.Mother,ifsheshoulddie,itwouldbemyfault."AndJodroppeddownbesidethebedinapassionofpenitenttears,tellingallthathadhappened,bitterlycondemningherhardnessofheart,andsobbingouthergratitudeforbeingsparedtheheavypunishmentwhichmighthavecomeuponher.

           "It’smydreadfultemper!Itrytocureit,IthinkIhave,andthenitbreaksoutworsethanever.Oh,Mother,whatshallIdo?WhatshallIdo?"criedpoorJo,indespair.

           "Watchandpray,dear,nevergettiredoftrying,andneverthinkitisimpossibletoconqueryourfault,"saidMrs.March,drawingtheblowzyheadtohershoulderandkissingthewetcheeksotenderlythatJocriedevenharder.
